Dry needling is an effective and efficient technique for the treatment of muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. Dry needling is extremely effective for relaxing overactive muscles, as the needles are targeted toward the trigger points within the overactive muscles.
The approach is based on Western anatomical and neurophysiological principles. Dry Needling should not to be confused with the Traditional Chinese Medicine technique of acupuncture which targets acupressure points.
Everyone talks about them, but what exactly are they?
Trigger points, are described as hyperirritable points in the fascia surrounding skeletal muscle. They are associated with palpable nodules in taut bands of muscle fibres and are often responsible for the pain felt when palpated.
Deep Tissue massage is one application of treatment your therapist may use during your appointment. It is a slow, firm pressure massage designed to target the deep layers of muscle and facia (connective tissue surrounding muscles). It is used for chronic aches and pains and contracted areas such as upper and lower back, hips and neck.
Sports massage can be easily incorporated into a Myotherapy appointment. This treatment is designed to help muscle systems used for a particular sport or activity. This treatment uses a variety of techniques to help athletes in training before, during or after an event. It might be used to promote flexibility and help prevent injuries. Other benefits include; increased range of motion which can lead to enhanced performance, decreased muscle stiffness and soreness and reduced recovery time post event or injury.
Pregnancy is such an incredible time, but for so many can often be overshadowed by crippling back, hip and shoulder pain. Most of us live with postural and functional imbalances without too much discomfort, however pregnancy often highlights these imbalances and can create a very long and painful nine months if left untreated. Massage during pregnancy can provide a lot of relief. Appointments are tailored to individual needs. Clearance from your doctor is recommended before booking If you are new to this particular treatment.
Vacuum Cupping therapy is an ancient form of therapy in which a local suction is created on the skin; this decompresses the tissue which mobilises blood flow in order to promote healing. Suction is created using heat or a mechanical hand cupping device.
A Transcutaneous Electrical Nerve Stimulation (TENS) is commonly used for chronic pain conditions or as part of a muscular recovery program after exercise. It involves a mild electrical current which stimulates nerve endings and pain receptors to adjust the pain feedback sent to the brain.
As part of any Myotherapy consultation therapists may suggest some exercises, stretches and/or environmental changes to help facilitate improvements. These may include postural changes, environmental changes such as ergonomics of desk etc, strength exercises and/or stretching to be done at home. All prescribed exercises are individually designed to address individual circumstances.
